What does it take to be a Therapy Pet Team?

I can tell you what I did and perhaps it will inspire you to follow through and become a therapy pet team with your pet!

First thing I did was research. I looked online at the different therapy pet organizations websites and gleaned what I could from there, and I bought books on the subject. I highly recommend these books that I've read:

  • The Healing Power of Pets by Dr. Marty Becker (This is *must* read so you understand the impact animals have on our lives.)
  • Therapy Dogs: Training Your Dog to Reach Others by Kathy Diamond Davis
  • Therapy Dogs Today by Kris Butler
  • Pet Partners Team Training Manual by Delta Society (Even if you are not going to register with Delta, this is an excellent resourse of information on preparing to visit, how to visit different types of people, etc.)
  • The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson (For dog owners)
  • Click to Calm by Emma Parsons (For dog owners)
  • Click Training for Cats by Karen Pryor

There are more books that can be added to this list, but I highly recommend starting with these before you go out and seek a nursing home to *test the waters* with your pet.

After reading and taking notes from these books, I contacted several of the therapy pet organizations for information and to see if there were local representatives / testers and also if their support matched my needs. I live away from cities, just local towns, so traveling was out of the question for me for classes, etc.

While getting in touch with the various organizations, I went to the 2 local nursing homes and talked to their Therapeutic Recreation Directors and explained what my goal was and if I could bring my dog to their facility under their supervision for training and exposure. I did this first with my dog, Helga. It wasn't until Helga was further in her training that I thought of trying this with one of my cats..

Story to be continued......

Meanwhile, what you can do is lots of research on the subject starting with the books I've recommended. Arrange to attend a KPETS orientation if you are in the Perry, Dauphin, Cumberland, York, or Lancaster Counties.
